Every year, CAA Saskatchewan conducts the Worst Road in Saskatchewan campaign. Residents and motorists throughout the province nominate roads in their area, and cast votes, on what road they think is in need of repairs, or where there are serious safety concerns such as signage or congestion.

“We are so busy with our campaign this year,” exclaimed Angel Blair, communications specialist with CAA Saskatchewan. “It looks like we’re off to a great start. We’ve got people voting at caask.ca/worstroads. The great news is you can go and you can look at the current top 10, so we encourage everyone to see where their road is on that top 10.”

For a community, or a road in that community, to end up on the list isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Blair was sure to point out. When the campaign is finished, and the results are all in, CAA Saskatchewan presents the data to organizations such as SARM and SUMA, as well as the Heavy Construction Association of Saskatchewan. The list is also given to the provincial and municipal governments.

“We often hear back that some of these roads are no surprise to them, but it does highlight the roads, and maybe if a road has been missed, it’s on their radar,” Blair added.

In the first 24 hours of the polls being open, the voters had four roads from Weyburn on the list: 1st Avenue Northeast, Railway Avenue, Government Road, and King Street. While Weyburn may have some streets on the top 10 now, it doesn’t mean it will stay that way.

“This top 10 changes minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day in the contest,” Blair said.

Two of the roads from Weyburn that made the list are also scheduled to have some work done this year. A major repair and rehabilitation project on 1st Avenue Northeast, funded in part by the province’s Urban Highway Connector Program, will be done this year, and there is repaving work scheduled for Railway Avenue.

The voting remains open until April 29th, with the results being announced on April 30th. This year, eligible votes will also be entered for a draw for a $1,000 gift card from Shell.
