Interim Leader of the Saskatchewan NDP John Nilson

They won official opposition status in May of last year, but with Dwain Lingenfelter stepping down as the Provincial leader and, of course, the untimely death of Federal Leader Jack Layton, the victories for the NDP have been overshadowed by some of the downfalls.

With the party looking for new leaders both provincially and federally, Interim Leader of the Saskatchewan NDP John Nilson has a positive attitude looking forward, despite losing a number of key ingredients.

"We ended up with nine capable people, eight of us who have experience with the Legislature and one new person who is lawyer and a long time party person in Saskatoon. So, we have a very strong team of us who are providing the opposition at the Legislature," says Nilson.

Nilson says they received plenty of support from those ages 18 to 30, and the rejuvenation of the NDP may rest in the hands of the next generation within the party - someone who could step into a 10 or 15 year term. Nilson says he has served nearly 20 years within the Legislature and won't be running for leadership, but will be part of the team preparing for the next election.
