Fun and football.

It was a good night for both Wednesday night at the Weyburn Minor Football Field as Brett Jones held a FUNdamentals camp with youth from across Weyburn. The event, which was provided by Jones, the NFL and the New York Giants at no cost, aimed to team the basics of the game to younger players, ahead of Jones’ Football Academy for older players, which starts Thursday.

“Just coming out with your friends, on a beautiful evening like tonight, and just being able to enjoy the game and have a lot of fun, I think the kids are really going to enjoy it,” Jones said just before the rush of players came out for the event.

Volunteer coaches ran the players through a series of non-contact drills the volunteers included a number of alumni from the Weyburn Minor Football program, such as Logan Mainil, Rylan Hoffman and Brett Bowler. Brett Jones’ brother Scott, another alumnus of the WMF programs was also on hand to help out.

Chris Michel with Weyburn Minor Football helped organize the events this week, both the FUNdamentals camp and the Football Academy.

“We got talking last year, Brett and I, about running a camp like this when Brett was home training for his offseason, and he just loves working with the kids and giving back to the football that gave him so much,” Michel said.

The Football Academy will see dryland training, and full padding drills for players in the Pee Wee, Bantam and High School programs. They run on Thursday and Friday.
