SaskPower is advising residents should be wary of the latest scam to make its rounds.

In a release issued Tuesday morning, the Crown power utility says the latest scam is a text message sent out over the past day. The fraudulent text message states it is a billing reminder, and tells the customer there is an outstanding balance of $10.58 that needs to be paid via the link included in the message, or, quote, “you may lose your electricity.”

SaskPower said the message did not come from them and is actually an out-of-province phone number. They add that anyone who receives the message should not follow the link, or if they do, do not provide any information on the website. Those who believe they have fallen victim to the scam are encouraged to contact their financial institution or law enforcement.

The release added SaskPower never threatens communications via text message, and payment reminders are only sent through email at this time. If anyone is unsure about the legitimacy of communication claiming to be from SaskPower, they can contact SaskPower Customer Care at 888-757-6937.
