The SJHL released the players of the week for the first week of action since the Christmas break, and two members of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were recognized for their performance. Defenseman Lucas Jeffreys and goaltender Dazza Mitchell both received honours.

Jeffreys was named the Defenseman of the Week after a stellar performance along the blue line. On top of being solid defensively, he contributed offensively as well. He had a goal and three assists in the two wins over the Estevan Bruins on the weekend.

“Everybody bought in this weekend, we had a good first week back at practice, and I think it really showed,” Jeffreys said after practice on Monday. “I think I couldn’t have done it without the guys this weekend.”

Jeffreys wasn’t the only one to praise his teammates for their efforts on the weekend. Mitchell was also thanking his teammates for their efforts as he was named the SJHL’s Goaltender of the Week.

“Two wins that we needed, four big points against our rivals – it always feels good, especially after last year,” Mitchell added. “Really got to thank the guys. They bailed me out there quite a bit, blocked a ton of shots, and scored some goals when we needed it.”

Mitchell finished the weekend with a 2-0-0-0 record, stopping 59 of the 63 shots he faced - a .937 save percentage. He also posted a GAA of 1.99 for the weekend.

While two of the Red Wings were named players of the week, there was speculation a third could have joined the ranks. The five points on the weekend by Ty Mason had his name in contention for Forward of the Week, but those honours went to Melville’s Issac Suppin, who had six points – three goals and three assists – in two wins over the Yorkton Terriers.

The Red Wings will now get set for three big games this week. It starts out with a match-up against the Notre Dame Hounds in Radville Tuesday. Friday, the Battlefords North Stars come to town and then Saturday the Wings are in Yorkton to face the Terriers.
