The Weyburn Oilwomen held a fundraiser last Saturday night, 'A New King is Born' featuring a concert from none other than Brayden King.

Acting Chair Carmen Sterling said it's one of the two main fundraisers they hold each year.

"We rely heavily on the funds that we're able to generate from both of those events, and I have to say that we're very happy with the preliminary results so far," she noted. "We don't have all of our certain expenses in, but we do feel like this has probably been one of our best fall events or winter events that we've had, and we couldn't do it without sponsors. Weyburn businesses, individuals, some pretty small businesses to some pretty large businesses always support us, and we're pretty thankful for that."

She said they most likely did exceed their expected goal for the event, despite not selling out on tickets.

"We changed it up a little bit this year, so we were trying to entice a different crowd," Sterling explained. "We've had dueling pianos in the past, and so Brayden was a great entertainer for us and everyone that was in attendance really enjoyed themselves, and then from a fundraising aspect, it was probably one of our best fall ones."

Jeff Tosczak was there facilitating the live auction, which, for example, saw a Weyburn hotel staycation sell for a whopping bid of $450.

"I know Jeff has been good about auctioning for us a number of times, and Weyburn Dodge was also the title sponsor, so we certainly can't generate those kinds of funds without the support of the business community here in Weyburn."

"It's a testament to the business community, but also to the people that were there, that bid on those items. I mean, we were pretty excited about it. Some of those bids we had coming in on the live auction, while they were auctioning that off, was it's pretty exciting for our organization to hear those numbers coming in," she shared. "That's what I guess the holiday spirit is, Christmas spirit is. When you're doing an event that close to Christmas, it's a time to celebrate, and also a time to help organizations like ours do the things that we need to do throughout the year."

This is one of two major fundraisers for the Weyburn Oilwomen, which are key for their organization. The other fundraiser held earlier in the year is their annual golf tournament.

Since 2018, they have donated over $102,000 back to a wide variety of organizations and initiatives in the Weyburn area. Those include the dressing room sponsorship at the Weyburn Credit Union Spark Centre, donations to minor sports teams and events, the Sled Shed at River Park, the Graduation Initiative (to help young people get to grad in style), the Young Woman of Distinction Award at the YF Women of Distinction Awards, the 'Clear the List' initiative for teachers, and Santa for Seniors.
