The regular report from the Weyburn Police Service last week included a call last Tuesday night around 11:30 p.m. about a youth who had overdosed on an unusual substance.

Police Chief Jamie Blunden said EMS had requested police assistance.

"There was a 16-year-old youth who had intentionally overdosed on some hand sanitizer, so a little bit different than what we normally see," he shared. "But the individual was going through some times, so our members went down and the individual was alert and was with the EMS and subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment."

The youth had intentionally overdosed by drinking the hand sanitizer, said Blunden.

"There is a chemical in there and I would take it that they thought there might be some way of ingesting it," he noted. "Our members were able to calm the situation down and then get the individual over with the EMS to the hospital for treatment. The facilities at the hospitals there and the professionals to be able to treat them for the issues that he was going through."

Blunden said thankfully, it was a positive ending.

"At the end of the day, everybody turned out to be safe, and it wasn't on the other end of things where, you know, we were making notifications. So in this instance, it worked out well."
