The Weyburn Beavers have been unstoppable at home this season unless their opponent is the Swift Current 57’s. For the third time this season, the 57’s topped the Beavers at Tom Laing Park Sunday, by a final of 5-3.

The Beavers were the first one the board, with Drake Pilat driving in Keaton Greenwalt with a single to centre in the first inning.

Weyburn starting pitcher Chase Thometz held the 57’s off the board until the third inning, when a double to left by Ruben Rodriguez scored two runs for Swift Current, giving them the lead. In the fourth, the 57’s added with another run, after a walk with bases loaded.

In the bottom of the fourth, Corey Harrell made it a one-run game with a blast to right field. The solo home run was his tenth of the season and set a new mark for most home runs in a season by a Weyburn Beaver. He also has 17 in his career with Weyburn, two behind the current all-time home run king Derek Wallace.

Swift Current would get the run back in the fifth inning. A single from Myles Miller brought in Ben Komonosky. It had appeared Beavers catcher Omar Prieto had made the tag at home plate, but the umpire made the call the runner was safe, which drew the ire of the hometown fans.

It became a 5-2 game in the seventh with another RBI for Miller.

The Beavers would score one more run in the eighth, as Tyler Scott crossed the plate on a passed ball.

On the mound, Thometz was tagged with the loss. He went five innings, striking out eight, but giving up four runs. Ken Williams pitched two innings in relief with two strikeouts and giving up a run. The game was finished off by newcomer Christian Rivera and Dalton Ross, who pitched an inning each.

It was an elimination style event, with players getting seven swings to try to hit one home run to the next round. A total of seven batters advanced to the second round, including Harrell and Greenwalt, as well as Felix Correa, Antony Tejada, Tyler Scott, Omar Prieto, Cory Ewald and Gabe Melendez.

In the second round, Harrell, Greenwalt, Tejada, Ewald and Melendez advanced.

In the third round, it dropped to five pitches each, and Harrell and Greenwalt were the only two to homer, so they automatically advanced to the final, with an extra round between Ewald, Tejada and Melendez to determine third. It would be Tejada who went yard to get third place in the derby. This set up the final round between Greenwalt and Harrell, and it would be Greenwalt who came out on top in the derby.

In the end, it came down to Greenwalt and Harrell for the title. Greenwalt would be the one left standing after putting his fourth home run of the event over the fence in right field.

The Beavers will be back in action Monday night when they host the Okotoks Dawgs at Tom Laing Park.
