The 2024 baseball season opened for the 18U AA Angels on Saturday at Tom Laing Park. Before the action got started on the diamond, though, the team honoured Andon Hoff, a former player who passed away last August.

The team hung his jersey outside of the home dugout at Tom Laing Park, and the team also debuted jerseys being worn in Hoff’s honour. The black jerseys have the winged AH logo on the front, and say 4Kutch on the back where the player’s name would traditionally go.

Once the games got started for the weekend, the team would go on to put four wins on the board to open the campaign.

The first games of the weekend were against the Regina Blue Jays. The first game would see the Angels provide a lot of run support for starting pitcher Brasen Sim as Weyburn went on to a 10-3 victory. The second game of the day had Owen Klein getting the start on the mound, and Cole Godlonton coming on for the save in the 7th as the Angels won 6-4.

Sunday the Moose Jaw Canucks made the trip down to Weyburn, where the bats for the Angels were still hot. The first game of the Mother’s Day doubleheader would be a 16-12 win. This was followed up by a big 19-8 win in the second game. Chace Kradovill would finish the second game with two home runs. The first came in the third inning, and the second was a walk-off shot to put the Angels up by more than ten runs, ending the game in five innings.

The Angels are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Regina to face the White Sox.

The 13U AAA Beavers opened their season with games on the weekend. It started on Saturday against the Swift Current 57s in Swift Current. It would be the 57s coming out on top in the first game of the weekend, winning 7-6.

Then, a matinee doubleheader on Sunday would see the bats come alive, as the Yorkton Cardinals came to town. The two teams would combine for 76 runs on the afternoon.

The first game of the day was a 26-15 win for the Cardinals. Weyburn, though, would have a strong showing at the plate. Chase Verbeurgt would have a grand slam, with Sawyer Trebel hitting two home runs himself, and Cohen Fleck adding another.

The second game of the day would be a 21-14 win for the Beavers. Liam Lacoste had two home runs in the win, with Logan Harrison adding one himself.
