The Weyburn Fire Department was dispatched yesterday afternoon at 3:13 p.m., to the former grounds of the Souris Valley Regional Care Centre, located by the Community Health Services building.

This after reports of a fire west of the Riverwood subdivision.

In a statement made by the City of Weyburn, firefighters responded to heavy brush fire upon arrival, which was gaining momentum to the east. Crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

A City of Weyburn front-end loader assisted in creating a fire guard, and crews were on the scene for several hours eliminating hot spots. Other responding units included a fire engine, command vehicles, a wildland truck, a utility truck, and a water tanker.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Weyburn Fire Department will check the area frequently, monitoring weather and wind conditions.

No occupied structures or personal property were damaged in the fire.
