Following 18 months of dedicated effort, the Souris Valley Daycare in Oungre celebrated its official opening on February 1st. The idea for the project emerged from the challenges faced by families who had to commute to Weyburn or Estevan for childcare services. For some parents, the costs of childcare prevented them from rejoining the workforce. In response, residents of the local area united to establish this much-needed facility, aiming to provide convenient childcare services close to home.
President of the board, Kelsey Ashworth shares more, “It was the summer of 2022 when the whole idea originated and our board has been working hard to get this project up and going, and it's pretty surreal to be able to drive your kids a few miles and drop them off with people that you trust in a brand new and exciting facility. So, it's been kind of an emotional up and down type of week for us.”
Currently, the daycare employs six staff members, leading the operation is Executive Director, Connie Mason, four childcare workers as well as an on-sight cook.
Early Childhood Educator employee, Shaina Deschner shares her excitement, “It feels really good, especially because as a board member, I didn't realize all the work that went into it. Coming together as a group of ladies and brainstorming what our community needs was pretty phenomenal. We really worked our butts off to get this to its point and it's here now and we're excited.”
Deschner clarified that the recently established facility provides both full-time and daily accommodation to meet the needs of children attending part-time. With a capacity for up to 21 children and subsidized options available, there are still open spaces. Deschner encourages interested parents to reach out to the center for additional information.
In addition, Ashworth explained they are also looking to add more people to their team, those interested are welcome to reach out for more details by calling (306)421-1180. You can keep up to date with Souris Valley Daycare by following its Facebook page.
