The Special Olympics Weyburn athletes will be helping out at Tim Horton's this weekend for a special fundraiser. From Friday, February 2nd to Sunday, February 4th, the Special Olympics donut campaign is back again to help out the local organization.

"They create a special donut specifically for this event, and they sell it all weekend, and then one hundred percent of the proceeds from those sales go directly towards local Special Olympics community programs," shared Heidi Vogel with the Special Olympics Weyburn Executive Committee.

She said the athletes will be spending some time at Tim's during the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday.

"They just have some various jobs they get to like help decorate the donuts and stuff like that, and just kind of be a part of the event," she shared, noting the meet-and-greet part is fun for the athletes.

"They look forward to it and enjoy it, and they love to socialize. Last year, we were parked kind of right at the front there, and we had a great time letting people know what was going on, and just hanging out and being a part of the community is always super special for us and the athletes."

Vogel said they have close to 50 athletes participating in their Special Olympics Bowling program.

"It was stalled for a little while there with COVID and the bowling alley [being closed at times]," she said. "It was missed, and it is the biggest focus of Special Olympics Weyburn."

She said there is talk of reigniting their floor hockey program as well as possibly starting a bocce ball program.

"Those pieces all entail gathering more volunteers, which we're always putting a call out for volunteers, as we do require a certain amount to be able to run those programs," Vogel stated. "Then there are some pieces where we do have to get some coaching certifications, but lots in the works."

The bowling program is up and running and a big success for Weyburn.

For those who would like to order a dozen or more of these special donuts, Vogel added that there will be an order form posted to their Facebook page HERE, and you can also call Tim Horton's Weyburn to order directly.

"Please come buy the donuts and speak with the athletes and support Special Olympics."
