A malfunctioning fire alarm set forth a 'wall of water' onto the Cugnet Centre stage on Thursday at Weyburn Comprehensive School, causing the performances to be postponed for the Wedding Singer senior musical.

"Lots of the kids were devastated. Nobody knew if we were gonna be able to continue or what shape everything was in," said WCS Band Teacher Brayden Jensen.

He said while everything was soaked and looked damaged, thankfully, the pit band instruments directly below the stage were not harmed.

"We're lucky that most of the sets are intact and most of the gear is intact, and we're ready to roll with what we've got. But it was a long long weekend, trying to think over and figure out what to do and waiting on inspections and clearance to make a decision," he explained.

"Lots of stuff got wet, but everything we plugged in yesterday seemed to work, so they should be okay. There are some microphones that were with the drum kits that are totaled, I believe, and a couple of hanging mics on the stage. The top curtain has been pulled down because it was soaked, obviously, but other than that, I think we're in good shape to get through some dress rehearsals the next couple of nights and then be ready for Friday."

Jensen said they got clearance just yesterday from the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division after inspections were completed.

Performances will go this Friday night (May 26th) at 7:00 p.m., followed by a matinee at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 28th, and two more 7:00 p.m. performances on Monday, May 29th and Wednesday, May 31st.

"So anyone that purchased tickets for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday this week, their tickets are valid for any of the four shows that are going to be happening in the next few days," he noted.

Jensen said that the smoke machines seemed to be what triggered the 'wall of water', and therefore they will not be using the smoke machine going forward, even though they used the smoke machine throughout all the Frozen junior musical performances in the fall, with no issues.

He added the members of both Cast A and Cast B will be able to make the new performance dates work, especially given that the dress rehearsals fall on the originally-scheduled performance dates, and the Friday and Sunday shows are as per the original plan as well.
