For any artists hoping to further their process by being subjected to critique, some changes have been made to the options for local opportunities to do so.

The Weyburn Arts Council have been reviewing whether or not they'd continue on with the Local Art Adjudication competition and exhibition, which has always taken place in spring.

This year, however, WAC took a step back from holding the event to consider their options.

City Curator Regan Lanning made the announcement at a recent art reception for the 2018 Local Adjudication winners that the show must go on, but not without some critical changes.

“We decided we do love the adjudication and we will continue to do it, however, we will be changing its place in the yearly calendar of events,” she said.

She explained the main reason for the changes.

“Normally, it takes place March and April, which comes straight on the heels of the James Weir Peoples' Choice,” said Lanning. “That, we feel, was problematic, for many local artists to have our two big art events happening right after each other. So we will be moving the adjudication to September and October.”

The adjudication will also now take place bi-annually.

“We will be holding it in 2020 and then we will having 2021 off, and having it again in 2022,” she explained. “So we're looking at having it every second year as opposed to every year. And of course, in 2022 we'll be in the new facility.”

Plans for the Weyburn Cultural and Recreation Centre include a new art gallery and pottery studio.
