Weyburn's Braden Birnie, who plays for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks in Division 1 of the NCAA, was given a special show of support from more than 80 Canadian fans for a game on Friday, January 5th.

“It was a mix of family, friends from Weyburn and Steinbach, and co-workers of mine from Golden West in Steinbach, where Braden played Junior with the Pistons in his 20 year old season,” explained his dad, Cameron Birnie.

He said it was an incredible showing of support that Braden and their entire family will never forget.

“When Braden came out for warm ups Friday night and his friends and family started cheering and chanting, it was one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed,” shared Birnie. “Some of Braden's close friends with whom he played minor hockey with in Weyburn made the surprise appearance on the weekend, and Braden was certainly happy to see them, and appreciative of everyone's support.”

The Nanooks played a pair of games on the weekend at the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks in Grand Forks, ND. North Dakota won Friday's game 6-4 before taking Saturday's rematch 6-2.
