A former captain of the Weyburn Red Wings has received recognition from his collegiate team.  

Braden Birnie, who played in 93 games for the Red Wings, and served as captain for part of the 2021-22 season prior to being traded to the Steinbach Pistons, was named the Most Improved Player with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks.  

Birnie is in his freshman season with the Nanooks. He has played in 18 games so far this season, and has scored two goals while adding three assists.
