Pinewood derbies are a timeless tradition heavily rooted in the culture of Scouting programs such as Weyburn's 5th division, who hosted their own version of the event on Saturday. Taking place at the Grace United Church, volunteers from Integrity Oilfield Services and Legion Branch #47 donated their time as acting judges for the combined groups of Weyburn, Moose Jaw and Assiniboia. CIBC, Weyburn Co-op Foods, the Weyburn Wildlife Federation, and Red Swan Pizza sponsored the races where children competed for downhill superiority.

First, the gravity-powered vehicles were inspected and given vanity ratings to determine the best-looking rig in the room. Larger semi-truck models were pitted against each other in a mobility challenge before hitting the tracks, and the new "Beaver-Boats" category was also unveiled. Then, after a lunch sponsored by an $800 donation from the Weyburn Wildlife Federation, time and distance trials began.
