Wrestlers from Weyburn Comprehensive School were in Warman on the weekend to take part in the Scratch and Claw Meet. The seven athletes from Weyburn did well and came home with seven medals.

In the Elite Female 46-50 kg group, Ember Schira won the gold medal. She beat Kessia Whitehawk of Martin Collegiate in Regina by tech fall in the first round, then bear Sasha Perry from Holy Cross by fall in the second round. In the fourth round, Schira beat Janaye Stribbell from Marion Graham Collegiate by fall in 57 seconds, then followed it up with a win by tech fall over Zara Meier of McLurg High School in the fifth round.

Kierra McCoy-Vallier picked up the silver in the Elite Female 57-62 group. She beat Rebecca Vlietstra from McLurg High School in the second round by fall in 31 seconds. Her next match would be a forfeit due to a scratch. In the fourth round, she won by fall over Jovana Raicevic from Holy Cross in 49 seconds. Her lone loss came against Katelyn Forseille from Stobart High School in a split decision (6-5).

It was a fourth-place finish for Cale Mohan in the Elite Male 46-50kg group. He lost all three of his matches in the event. He made up for it with a gold medal in the Novice Male 44-48kg group. He started off the novice event with a tech fall win (10-0) over Aden Audet from Holy Cross. Then, in the second round, he won by fall over Luke Kalmakoff from St. Mary High School in 1:48. Mohan then picked up a tech fall (10-0) win over Josh Weston from St. Joseph High School. In the final, he beat Gay Ku Kaw from Mount Royal by fall in two minutes.

In the Elite Male 54-57kg group, Halen Drake picked up a silver medal. He beat Noah Dangor from Centennial High School by fall in 1:58. Drake then suffered a loss in the third round, losing by tech fall (13-2) to Noah Klitch from Walter Murray Collegiate. In the fourth round, Drake bounced back with a 10-0 tech fall win over Dylan Hughes from Swift Current, then picked up a 10-0 tech fall win over Landon Harvey from Holy Cross.

Eric Fleming was wrestling in the Elite Male 63-65kg group. He finished the event with a silver medal. To get there, he fell in his first match by decision (12-8). He would come back with a win by fall over St. Joseph High School’s Cory Griffin in 2:23. Then, he won by fall over Jordan Lamontagne from Swift Current in 1:25. He finished off the event with a win by tech fall (14-4) over Zane Asmundson from Centennial High School.

It was a gold medal performance for Emily Soles in the Novice Female 59-64kg group. She picked up a win by fall over Victoria Zacharias from Walter Murray Collegiate in 1:11. Then, she won by fall over Madeline Thoen from Tommy Douglas Collegiate in 1:28. In the third round, Soles recorded a win by tech fall (12-2) over Tenneh Garlimah from Bethlehem High School. In the fifth round, Soles beat Sasha Ries from Swift Current by fall in 2:31.

The seventh athlete from Weyburn to put in a medal-winning performance was Brooklyn McSherry. She won the silver in the Novice Female 72-80kg group. In the first round, she beat Tori Barnes from Swift Current by fall in 37 seconds. In the second round, McSherry lost by fall in 51 seconds. Her round three match-up was a forfeit by her opponent.

The athletes from Weyburn Comprehensive will be back on the mat in Moose Jaw on February 8th.
