The Weyburn Beavers would take an early lead in their game against the visiting Medicine Hat Mavericks Tuesday night. The Mavericks, though, had different plans for the second half of the game, going on to a 13-7 win over Weyburn for their first win of the young WCBL season.

The Beavers would jump off to a lead with their first batter of the night. Ryan Dauphinee took a full-count pitch and sent it over the fence in left field, giving Weyburn a 1-0 lead.

“He’s been awesome,” said head coach Cam Williams of Dauphinee’s play so far this season. He would finish the game going 2-for-3 at the plate and extend his hitting streak to four games. He is also batting .615 so far this season.

“He’s really set the tone at the top of the order and, you know, it’s hard to see anyone else there right now,” Williams continued, mentioning that Dauphinee, in his second year with the Beavers, has become a leader on and off the field.

The Mavericks countered with three runs of their own in the third inning, but then Weyburn rallied to regain the lead. It started with a single from Brett Potter, the Dauphinee drew a walk. A single from Ryan Muizelaar loaded the bases for Trent Lawson who brought Potter home with a single. Then a sacrifice fly from Ryan McCarthy cashed in Dauphinee, a fielder’s choice by Triston Madison brought in Muizelaar and Lawson scored on a Jared Hall single.

From there, Medicine Hat took over, scoring a run in the 4th inning to make it 5-4, then two more in the sixth, seventh and eighth. They finished off with three runs in the ninth.

Weyburn would get two more runs across the plate in the eighth. Eric Wirun hit an RBI single to bring home Madison, the Wirun would be cashed in four batters later when Muizelaar hit a single.

Luke Zimmer, making his first start of the season, would be tagged with the loss. He allowed five earned runs in six innings of work while striking out one.

Weyburn’s Sutter Balog, called up for the night from the 18U AAA Southeast Twins, would pitch the seventh inning. He struck out two while allowing two earned runs in a full inning of work.

“I think he was a little bit nervous, but his stuff was electric, that’s for sure,” Williams said of the performance by the call-up. “It was good to see him out there and compete. A couple of mistake pitches but like I said, he’s 17 years old and that gonna happen with that. I really liked his stuff and if we can get him out here a little more here and there, then it’s just going to get better from there.”

Jacob Clark would come on for the eighth innings, striking out two in 2/3 of an inning’s work. Then Brett Paterson took over, finishing the 8th and pitching part of the ninth. The last out of the game was pitched by Eric Wirun.

With the loss, the Beavers fall to 1-3 on the season. They will have a chance to get the win back Wednesday night, however, as they host the Mavericks for a second game. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Tom Laing Park.
