The Big Six semifinals opened Tuesday night with the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings travelling down to Redvers for game one of their best-of-five series with the Rockets.

After being tied 1-1 after 20 minutes, the Wheat Kings would take the lead early in the second, but from there it would be all Redvers as they scored six unanswered goals to take the first game of the series 7-2.

Brady Fidierchuk opened the scoring for the Rockets at the 3:51 mark of the first period with his third of the playoffs, assisted by Kenton Miller and Drew Hoff. Then, Yellow Grass would respond with a goal before the end of the period.

With 4:15 left on the clock, Braden Mellon would net his third of the postseason. His goal, a shorthanded marker, would be unassisted.

Mellon then struck again in the second period to give the Wheat Kings the lead. Just 3:05 into the period Mellon would score a power play goal, assisted by Zach Douglas and Luke Arndt. From there, though, the Rockets would take over.

It started with a goal from Brady Gaudet just 1:39 after Mellon’s goal. His first of the playoffs was assisted by Hoff and Fidierchuk. Then, Jordon Miller would score with 7:16 to go in the period, kicking off a Redvers rally that would see them score three goals in just under a minute. Miller’s goal would be assisted by Kenton Miller and Travis Poirier.

Braden Magotiaux then scored 20 seconds after Miller, assisted by Todd Gervais, and Jordon Miller. The spurt of scoring would then finish up with Colby Potapinski finding the back of the net 36 seconds after Magotiaux. He was assisted on the goal by Poirier and Kelsey Kenler.

With a 5-2 lead heading into the third period, the Rockets would put the game out of reach, starting with a goal from Kenton Miller at the 7:38 mark. His tally was assisted by Hoff and Gaudet. Fidierchuk then scored his second of the game with 8:13 left to play. He was assisted on the goal by Justin Perreaux and Hoff.

The series will now shift to Yellow Grass for Game 2 next Wednesday, with Game 3 scheduled for Redvers on March 3rd.
