The Weyburn Lacrosse Association has opened up registration for their Field Lacrosse season.

"Our season is going to start up in the fall from mid August to and it will run till mid-October depending on the age categories," shared Field Lacrosse Coordinator Chuck Hignett. "Our age categories are going to be U-7 all the way up to U-20, two years apart, except for the U-20s."

He said Field Lacrosse is played outside on the size of a football field for older players, and a smaller field for younger players.

While Field Lacrosse previously ran at the same time as Box Lacrosse, which is currently running this spring, the program is now going to run in the fall so more players can get involved.

"More people hopefully will be able to attend, because we won't be as busy with both programs going," Hignett said.

"We'll be running the program at Jubilee Park, as well as, if weather is inclement hopefully we're going to get some time at the Spark Centre and and then run some indoor stuff as well."

He said Field Lacrosse is similar to Box Lacrosse but the players don't use a kidney belt, and cleats are encouraged.

"Our defensive players are able to play with a longer pole, a defensive pole, as you get the advantage of keeping that offensive player away from you, so it's just a defensive positioning."

Hignett said they're willing to teach kids who haven't played Lacrosse before, and they also welcome those who have played before.

"We're willing to take on anybody that wants to come out and play, getting those kids out and keeping the sticks in their hands. And then it's good conditioning for hand eye coordination, lots of skills that crossover with hockey and you can see all the different kinds of weather because we're starting in August and ending up in October, so it could be cooler too. But it's great to be outside for parents and fans to come out and watch on a lounge chair and watch the games, and then it's so good for the kids to be out there enjoying the summer and the weather as well."

He said practices would be twice a week for each age category, with festivals, similar to tournaments, when they would travel or host with other communities.

The costs for registration are: $75 for U-7;  $100 for U-9 and U-11; and $150 for U-13 to the U-20. To register, forms are available on the Weyburn Lacrosse Association website weyburnthrashers.ca

Players need their own helmet with a cage, sticks, shoulder pads, gloves, elbow pads, and gloves. Cleats are optional, and goalie equipment and balls are supplied.

Hignett said their tentative start date is August 19th, and they are still hoping to see more volunteers sign up to help with the program with coaching, officiating, and managing.
