The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles senior girls’ volleyball team opened up their season this past weekend, playing in the Hank Lorenzen Cougar Volleyball Classic at the University of Regina. The Eagles would overcome an early stumble and went on to take the Premier Division of the tournament, with one of the Eagles named the tournament MVP.

The Eagles opened up the tournament against Lanigan and would come up short in that first game, with Lanigan winning 2-0 (25-22, 25-12). Weyburn shook that off and proceeded to rattle off six straight wins.

The first win was over Notre Dame, taking the match 2-0 (25-8, 25-18). They opened up Saturday beating Langham 2-1 (25-12, 20-25, 15-5) and then topped Virden 2-0 (25-12, 25-11). This moved the Eagles to the playoff round, where they faced Wynyard. The Eagles would win 2-0 (25-16, 25-18), putting them into the semi-finals against Lanigan. This time, WCS would prevail, winning 2-1 (20-25, 25-21, 15-8).

In the finals, Weyburn would face the Greenall Griffins from Balgonie. The first set was a close one, with Weyburn coming out on top 27-25. Then, in the second set, they won 25-22, giving them their first tournament win of the season in their first tournament of the season.

Ella Morken would take home the MVP honours for the tournament.

The Eagles will be back in action this coming weekend, again in Regina, at the Mega Volley. They will be hosting their home tournament at WCS on September 22nd and 23rd.
