The Weyburn Wildlife Federation will host a Fishing Derby at Mainprize Lake this Saturday, March 2nd.

Troy Kincaid said registration will be held in the Marina from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with the fishing going from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

"Hopefully the weather is nice and people come out and try and win some money," he invited.

For adults, one hole is $30, or $50 for two holes, and for youth 15 and under, it's $20 per hole.

Kincaid said they usually see around 80 to 100 participants at their winter fishing derbies.

"That's kind of what we've averaged for all our tournaments throughout the years, it all depends on the weather. If it's super nice, we could have a lot more, or if it's ugly out, we could have a lot less."

Fishing this winter, he added, has been average, as well.

"Early ice, it's always a good hot bite," he shared. "Then throughout January and February, it does slow down. Getting into March, it picks back up. The Pike bite really turns on in March and so does Perch. But fishing's been good. You've just got to put in your time right around that supper or early morning, it's usually better fishing. Put in your time throughout the day, and even if you're not catching fish, you're making memories."
