A chance for provincial gold for the senior girls' volleyball team from Weyburn Comprehensive School, as they qualified for the tournament at the regionals played at Weyburn Comprehensive on the weekend.

The Eagles hosted the tournament, which included teams from Swift Current, Yorkton, Estevan, and Balgonie. The five-team round-robin tournament would see the top two finishers advance to the provincial tournament.

In the opening game of the tournament Friday afternoon, Weyburn beat the Greenall Griffins from Balgonie 2-1 (16-25, 25-16, 15-11). In the evening game, though, the Eagles came up short against the Swift Current Ardens, falling 2-0. (25-19, 25-22).

Saturday, the action resumed, with Weyburn beating Yorkton 2-1 (23-25, 25-19, 15-10). Meanwhile, Swift Current ran the table and finished the tournament undefeated, clinching the first berth for the south at the 5A provincials.

This set up a crucial matchup between Estevan and Weyburn in the final game of the tournament. Both teams had records of 2-1 coming into the game, meaning the winner would be advancing, while the loser would see their season end.

The game went back and forth, with Estevan taking the first set 25-13. Weyburn, however, came roaring back, winning both of the final two sets (25-23, 15-13) to earn a berth at the provincials in Prince Albert.

The provincial tournament starts Friday afternoon and continues on Saturday.
