The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings have their season opener this Friday in Melville, after a successful preseason.

Nick Nielsen, Office and Public Relations Manager, is back as the voice of the Wings on Big 106.

“I'm excited to be back on the airwaves here in Southeast Saskatchewan bringing your Red Wings hockey,” Nielsen said. “We've got a really exciting team, obviously Mathieu Gautier was just drafted to the National Lacrosse League, 9th overall. We've got a guy out of Steinbach Pistons, Eduard Wruck who we've got a lot of excitement around defensively.”

Nielsen added they have many returning players this season.

“Ty Mason is back from WHL camp, so he's going to be with us here, Ian Maier after his injury last year looks like he's healed up in absolutely perfect form. We've got Dazza Mitchell in goal, and two other great goaltenders behind him.”

The team has its home opener on Friday, September 23rd against the Estevan Bruins at Crescent Point Place.

“Meyers Norris Penny is going to be our game day sponsor for that one, and I think they're going to be doing a bit of a tailgate party beforehand, so lots of things to be excited about. It's going to be a good time to be at the CPP.”

A team captain has not yet been named, and a captaincy announcement is being made on Thursday evening before the season opener.

“I'm not sure if it's going to be three or four guys, I'm thinking probably four.”

Catch all the action of Friday’s season opener at 7:00 p.m. on Red Wings Radio Big 106, sponsored by Great Plains Ford.
